General Accountant
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for general accounting support of the Autism Society of America (ASA). Specific
areas of responsibility include, non profit general ledger accounting, general and grant
related financial transaction processing, accounts payable cycle management, bank
reconciliation and monthly close. Assists the CFO with budgeting, financial analysis and
reporting, annual audit and preparation. Reports directly to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor of Accounting (required)
Experience: 3 years of experience in Finance and Accounting, preferably for Non Profit Agencies
Communication:
● Excellent attention to detail
● Ability to communicate well orally and in writing.
● Regular use of telephone and email for communication is essential.
● Experience with accounting, fundraising and database software systems.
○ Quickbooks and Salesforce experience preferred
● Proficiency in English required.
Computer Skills: Competency in Microsoft office suite and/or Google Suite. Significant
experience with Excel spreadsheets required.
Physical Performance: Must be able to work in a small office environment with reasonable
and appropriate accommodations if needed. This is an on-site position at the Autism
Society office in Rockville, Maryland.
Reasoning Ability: Must have ability to prioritize, multitask and make appropriate decisions.
Other Skills:
● Demonstrated excellence in accounting and finance.
● Experience with grant accounting is required.
● Ability to work independently or as part of a team, be highly organized, assume
responsibility, work well under pressure, multitask, be flexible, and maintain a high
level of attention to detail.
● Must be even-tempered and have the ability to meet deadlines.
● Enjoy working in a small team environment.
JOB RELATED DUTIES ‒ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
These duties are essential and specific to the successful implementation of this position.
● Demonstrate significant understanding of accounting principles as applied to
day-to-day fiscal processes.
● Process accounts payable cycle transactions, ensuring proper accounting and
documentation is provided for transaction approval.
● Work seamlessly with the development department to ensure proper revenue
recording and reporting.
● Process general journal and other accounting transactions timely throughout the
monthly accounting cycle.
● Process grant accounting transactions and assist with financial reporting for grants.
● Assist the CFO/COO with ensuring all grant funds, if applicable, are spent and
reported in line with grantor requirements and professional standards.
● Understand budgeting principles and reporting actual results compared to budget.
● Assist with the preparation of monthly financial reports, including financial
projections for the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors.
● Assist with routine and ad-hoc financial analysis.
● Assist with expense control efforts, including analyzing alternative service and
support proposals from vendors.
● Assist with preparation of the annual budget.
● Assist with the annual audit and filing process
● Accept flexible work schedule to meet the needs of the organization
